One crew, the whole city

Ottawa is big enough that hedges behave differently across it. The newer west-end subdivisions planted cedar in waves, so whole streets come due for the same corrective trim in the same season. Older Nepean and Bells Corners lots carry hedges tall enough that reaching the top safely is most of the job. East of the river, Orléans and Navan take the wind off the Ottawa River and show far more winter burn on the exposed face. Out in Greely, Osgoode and Metcalfe the hedges are windbreaks doing real work, where density matters more than a decorative finish.

When we can trim

Hedges want trimming when there is no frost and no risk of frost, which in Ottawa means roughly late April to late October. Cedar hedges should be trimmed professionally once a year, at about the same point each year. Keeping to that rhythm is what produces a full, richly coloured hedge rather than one that thins at the bottom.

Every visit finishes with a proper cleanup. Trimmings are stacked neatly at the end of the driveway, and our friends at Recycled Cedars collect them within 24 hours.
